East Coast
Following our trip around the Coromandel Peninsula, we decided to check out the East Coast of the North Island, as neither James nor myself had visited this area previously. The East Coast is largely uninhabited, bar a few scattered towns along the way - all with populations under 1000. However, much further down the East Coast is the city of Gisborne, which is the first place in the world to see the dawning of a brand new day. This part of New Zealand was the first to be sighted and explored by Captain Cook and the crew of HMS Endeavour in 1769. The drive down from Whitianga (Coromandel) to Ruatoria (East Coast) took roughly six hours, and we ended up parking up in a spooky forest area at night to get some sleep. After hearing strange noises and seeing strange flashes of light, it got to the point where I was too scared to look out of the window. It was horrible being in the middle of a pitch black forest in the middle of the night, but the area of the East Coast we were in was so desolate and isolated that there were no towns that offered accommodation!
